Building Types in South Fairlington

Our homes have unique architectural features which enhance our community and which were partially responsible for the recognition afforded Fairlington by the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. Enjoy!!!!

Over two weekends in January and May, 1999, volunteers were able to finish the surveys of 484 buildings located over Fairlington's 323 acres with the last survey taking place in May. On that Saturday in May, 55 dedicated volunteers, undaunted by the rain and adroitly balancing umbrellas in one hand and clip boards in the other, completed the survey forms for each building in South Fairlington. No small feat when you consider the array of differences in design and in layout among Fairlington's buildings.

Our historical consultant, Gail Baker, was able to establish a uniformity of architectural features among the buildings resulting in the formulation of 32 building types. Types are characterized by roof shape, the number of bays (windows and doors) and the number of units within a particular building. All this information became part of our nomination for Fairlington's listing on the State and National Registers and became part of the Commonwealth of Virginia's permanent record and published in Virginia's Register of historical properties.

The following are pictures and a summary of the descriptions of each of the 32 building types. The photos were provided by Harold and Norma Reem.
