Annual Meeting

T

he annual meeting of the Fairlington Commons Council of Co-Owners will be held Thursday, October 2nd in Room 100 of the newly renovated Fairlington Community Center located at 3308 S. Stafford Street, beginning at 7:30 p.m.  The purpose of the meeting will be to elect board members and to discuss topics of interest to the Co-Owners.

Three seats on the Board of Directors are up for election, the seats currently held by John Sinks, Arvy Myers, and Dennis Maridueña.  John has served on our Board in various capacities for 18 years.  Arvy has been filling the seat vacated by Patti Burke’s passing.  Dennis has served for the past three years.  All have indicated that they plan to run for election.

Board Members are elected by Co-Owner votes submitted by proxy or at the meeting.  Following the election, the Board reconstitutes itself, selecting officers from within as mandated by our By-Laws.  Anyone interested in serving on the Board should notify Secretary Bernie Weaver or President John Sinks by email, telephone, or by a note in the pool mailbox at 3367 S. Wakefield Street no later than Saturday, September 6th to be listed on the proxy ballot.

You must be a Co-Owner to serve on the Board. For additional information about responsibilities and time commitments, please contact a Board member with your questions.

Formal meeting notification and proxy ballots will be mailed to all Co-Owners in the near future.

For planning purposes – our annual Budget Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 2, 2008, also in Room 100 at the Community Center.

Pool News

T

he pool will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. through Labor Day Monday, September 1st.  This is a change from previous years, when we had closed at 6:00 p.m. on Labor Day.  The pool will also be open Tuesday, September 2nd through Friday September 5th from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturday, September 6th from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.  The last day of swimming for the 2008 pool season will be Sunday, September 7th from 10:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. after which the pool is closed.

Summers End Pool Party – Saturday, August 23rd beginning at 6:00 p.m. with “Margarita Hour.”  As in past years, we will provide the hotdogs, hamburgers, soft drinks, and condiments, and ask each family attending to bring a dish to share.  The rain date is Sunday, August 24th.

Doggie Dip – our Pool “goes to the dogs” on Sunday, September 7th from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. after which it is closed for the season.

Pool Lost and Found – if you’ve left something of value at the pool this summer, it may be claimed from the lifeguard.  Unclaimed items will be disposed of 14 days after the pool closes for the season.

As the lazy days of summer drift toward fall, we’d like to take this opportunity to say “Thank You!” to all of the volunteers who contributed to our pool’s operation, including Kathy Spitz and Anne Sullivan (pool passes), Debby Griffin (flowers), Jim Sharpe (pre-season cleanup), and Arnie and Cathy Malin (the party).  Commons Contractors who contributed include Billy Anderson (plumbing), John Healy (painting and masonry) Ed Murphy (pump motor maintenance), and Criterion Lawn Furniture Repair (lounge chair repair).  And, last but certainly not least, a big “Thank You!” to the employees of High Sierra Pools, Inc., without whom we would never have opened, much less enjoyed a trouble-free summer of operation!

set of three keys (they look like house keys) were found in the street on the Circle in the vicinity of 3311 S. Wakefield.  The keys are on a metal ring attached to a braided leather strap, and can be claimed from the lifeguard at the pool.

Parking Passes

R

esidents are reminded that a Fairlington Commons Parking Pass is required if you wish to park a vehicle in any of our off-street parking lots.  Parking Passes are not required if you park exclusively on S. 34th, Utah, or Wakefield Streets, which are Arlington County Public Streets.

A copy of our Parking Policy and Parking Pass Application is available on the web at:

http://fairlington.org/commonsdocuments.htm.

Parking Passes must be hung from the rearview mirror so as to be readily identifiable any time that your vehicle is in our parking lots.  If your Parking Pass has become worn or damaged to the extent that it cannot be hung from the mirror, please contact Board Secretary Bernie Weaver at 703-671-7024 to request a replacement.  Your current Parking Pass must be surrendered at the time a replacement is issued.  There is no charge for replacement of severely worn or damaged Parking Passes.

Dish Antennas

W

hile satellite dish antennas have become more prevalent in the Commons, their use is limited by a number of factors.  For a resident to enjoy satellite programming, their unit must be geographically oriented to provide a line-of-sight shot at the orbiting satellite while allowing the dish installation to conform with our By-Laws, which clearly preclude attaching or hanging any type of antenna from the exterior of a family unit.  The Board has no objection to satellite dish antennas per se, but such antennas are permitted only when they can be installed in limited common element (your patio) such that the top of the antenna does not exceed the highest elevation of the patio fence, and the dish is installed on a pole or post that is not part of the fence.  Installation of satellite dish antennas in the General Common Element is not permitted.  Residents who violate these few simple rules will be required to remove their antennas.

Trash

F

or our new residents, and as a reminder to everyone:

To ensure pickup, trash and recycling must be at the curb or designated pickup point no later than 7:00 a.m. the morning of pickup.  Residents may place trash and recycling at designated pickup points no sooner than dark the previous evening.

With regard to the pickup of large items – residents must call AAA Trash and Recycling (703-818-8222) to arrange for the pickup of large items.  Large items are generally picked up on Friday mornings, but please call AAA to ensure that your items can be picked up.

A special note about refrigerators – AAA will pick them up only if the refrigerant (Freon) has been removed by a certified technician, appropriate tags attached to the refrigerator, and arrangements have been made with AAA for the pickup.  If you are replacing your refrigerator, the best course of action is to arrange for removal of the old refrigerator by the company from whom you purchased the new one.

Great American Bake Sale Sets Record!

H

eld Friday, July 4th in conjunction with the Fairlington Villages/FCA 4h of July Parade, this year’s “Great American Bake Sale” raised an all time record $1,040 for “Share Our Strength," a non-profit organization dedicated toward ending childhood hunger in America.  This was the sixth consecutive year that The Commons has sponsored “The Great American Bake Sale,” and the credit for its success goes to Commons resident and event coordinator Cathy Malin.

This year’s event exceeded the amount raised by any previous sale, a success credited by Cathy to the fantastic weather, superb efforts by all who donated baked goods, and the generosity of the many patrons who made purchases and donations.  Thanks also to the Panera Bread Company, Diversions Cards and Gifts, Great Harvest Bread Company, One Two Kangaroo, One Good Tern, Reunions, Pro Feed, Unwined, Fairlington Pizza, Robcyns, and Ho Chinese Carryout and the CakeLove Bakery.

Plumbing Emergencies

P

lumbing emergencies should be immediately and directly addressed to Billy Anderson.  Billy has been the Commons plumber for many years, and knows the locations of our water lines, shut-off valves, sewer laterals, storm drains and manhole covers, many of which are not obvious to a plumber who is not familiar with our facilities. Be prepared to leave a message when you call – but count on a quick return call.

If Billy determines that a problem is the responsibility of the Commons, he will bill the Commons.  Otherwise you are expected to pay Billy at the time service is rendered.  Over the years owners have found Billy’s prices reasonable.  Billy is also available to perform routine, non-emergency work for Commons residents on an individual basis.
